I have two older brothers so there were always random cassettes drifting around our house. To this day, I struggle to tell Faith No More and Suicidal Tendencies apart because there was a blank C90 with Angel Dust on one side and The Art of Rebellion on the other.

Although there was a lot of metal in the house, none of it ever really connected with me. The two that did really change my world were two cast-offs that the brothers weren't interested in. First, I got hold of Bowie's Changes when I was 13. It's a best-of and I already knew most of the songs, but hearing them together seemed to unlock a puzzle and open up this new, weird, alien world.

A little while later, I got hold of a cassette with PJ Harvey's Rid Of Me on it, and that pretty much solidified my identity for the next ten years. During my first listen to that record, I had that come-to-Jesus moment where you say, "yes, this is me, this is who I've been the whole time."

No metal, but I was leant a bag of tapes to copy by a kid from the next block over. Lots of groups like 7 Seconds, The Descendants, All, and more. It was fantastic.
